SS22 Call for Papers is Now Open

Open submissions of abstracts for presentations at the 22nd Sociolinguistics Symposium (SS22) to be held at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, 27 – 30 June 2018.

Professor Stephen May and Professor Gary Barkhuizen, the Conference Co-convenors, invite submissions of abstracts for presentations at the 22nd Sociolinguistics Symposium (SS22) to be held at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, 27 – 30 June 2018.

 

The SS22 theme will focus on the interconnections (and fissures) across disciplinary, epistemological and geographical spaces in sociolinguistics at the present time and in relation to (re)situating current key developments (such as the multilingual turn and superdiversity). Abstracts should address one of the key strands of the Symposium:

  • Anthropological linguistics
  • Applied sociolinguistics
  • Cognitive sociolinguistics
  • Critical sociolinguistics
  • Dialectology
  • Educational linguistics
  • General sociolinguistics
  • Interdisciplinary
  • Language policy and planning
  • Social psychology of language
  • Sociology of language
  • Variationist sociolinguistics

Presentation Formats

We welcome proposals for colloquia, papers and poster sessions.

  • Colloquium (short) 1.5 hours with 3 contributors. 
    Colloquium (long) 3 hours with a minimum of 5-6 contributors.
    Colloquiua
    provide an opportunity for several presenters with a related theme or topic to present together in a supportive environment. It is the responsibility of the colloquium chair to organise their group.
     
  • Papers 25 minutes, including 5 minutes for questions/responses. This is a lecture style presentation supported with visual material.
     
  • Posters This is a display of material on a poster with scheduled opportunities to discuss the material with interested individuals.

Abstracts are to be submitted online. Please read the guidelines on how to make your submission before you start the submission process. Full details about the call for papers can be found on the Symposium website.

  • Professor Anna De Fina, Professor of Italian Language and Linguistics and Chair of the Italian Department at Georgetown University, USA and Affiliated Faculty with the Linguistics Department, USA.
  • ​Professor Rawinia Higgins, Te Tumu Ahurei (Māori) / Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Māori) of Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand
  • ​Emeritus Professor Janet Holmes, Emeritus Professor of Linguistics and Associate Director of the Language in the Workplace Project at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.
  • Professor Rita Kothari, Humanities and Social Sciences Department at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar.
  • Professor Li Wei, Chair of Applied Linguistics and Director of the UCL Centre for Applied Linguistics, at the UCL Institute of Education, University College London, UK.
  • Professor Tope Omoniyi, Professor of Sociolinguistics at the University of Roehampton in London where he is the Director of the Centre for Research in English Language and Linguistics (CRELL).
  • Professor Alastair Pennycook, Professor of Language in Education at the University of Technology Sydney.
